Alexander Georg Simon Ohm

Georg Simon Ohm Biography

(Erlangen, now Germany, 1789-Munich, 1854) German physicist. Discoverer of the electricity law that bears his name, according to which the strength of a current through a conductor is directly proportional to the difference in potential between the ends of the conductor and inversely proportional to the resistance which it opposes the passage of current. Georg Simon Ohm

son of a blacksmith, alternated in the teen years working with the studies, which demonstrated preference for the sciences. In 1803 he began attending the University of Erlangen, where he made rapid progress. First taught as a teacher in Bamberg, but in 1817 he was appointed professor of mathematics and physics at the institute in Cologne. Dedicated
from the beginning galvanoelectricidad studies, published in 1827 more detailed aspects of its law in an article entitled Die galvanische Kette, Mathematisch bearbeitet (The Galvanic circuit investigated mathematically), which, paradoxically, received a cold reception she pushed him to resign his position at the Jesuit college. Finally, in 1833 accepted a place at the Polytechnic School in Nuremberg.
then began work to be properly valued. In 1844, Pouillet stressed the importance of intuition and the following year Ohm received the Copley medal of the Royal Society of London. In 1849 he gave the chair of Physics at Munich, where he was also adviser to the Telegraph Administration. In honor of his work, the unit of electrical resistance of the international system bears his name (Ohm).
